Terms of Service
I. Definitions
  • “GÉANT” means GÉANT Vereniging (Association) which is registered with the Chamber of Commerce in Amsterdam with registration number 40535155 and operates in the UK as a branch of GÉANT Vereniging.
  • “GÉANT network” means the pan-European Research and Education network operated by GÉANT.
  • “Security” means GÉANT Security team.
  • “Assets” means all GÉANT property and resources, tangible or intangible, regarded as having value to its operations, and includes, but is not limited to: systems, services, network devices, network connections, virtual machines, software, applications, data, laptops, mobiles and reputation.
  • “Entity” means the legal entity, e.g. the National Research and Education Network (NREN), that makes use of GÉANT Assets.
  • “Service” means the service described here.
  • “GÉANT Testbeds Service (GTS)”, in this document, refers to the instance in GÉANT backbone infrastructure only.
II. Scope

The terms in this document apply to all Entities or its users cooperating with GÉANT network regarding the use of GÉANT resources for GTS. The terms of service comprise of Acceptable Usage Policy and the GÉANT Service Usage Policy.

III. Acceptable Use Policy

The intention of this Acceptable Use Policy is to help ensure shared assets are protected from illegal and/or damaging actions which could lead to the disruption of GÉANT services, GTS or otherwise.

Policy

GÉANT resources and services should only be used in such a way as to:

  • Apply public funding only for the purposes for which it is intended to be used;

GÉANT Network resources and services must not be used for any activity which purposely:

  • Adversely affects the operation of GÉANT network Services or other GÉANT network Entity by intentionally breaching security. Security breach includes any activity that affects the availability, integrity or confidentiality of the GÉANT resources. Examples include but are not limited to: unauthorized access to computer equipment or account; disruption of any service; forged routing information; ICMP floods and others; Introduce vulnerable services into the GÉANT without due diligence being performed;
  • Introduces honeypots, honeynets, or similar technology into the GÉANT without the explicit approval of Security;
  • Willfully wastes GÉANT resources (people, capacity, physical or virtual equipment, etc);
  • Compromises the privacy of users in relation to GDPR;
  • Breaches or acting against any international or European laws that are in place from time to time, including but not limited to, the Computer Misuse Act 1990 in the UK and the Computer Crime Act 2015 in the Netherlands;
  • Intentionally creates, executes, transmits or stores any defamatory, offensive, abusive, discriminatory, racist, indecent, menacing or malicious material. In particular, compliance with the relevant EC legislation in respect of employment equality, equal status & equality is required at all times;
  • Transmits or stores material in such a way as to infringe the intellectual property rights of any person or organization;

Non-compliance with these terms of service will be treated as a serious matter. GÉANT retains the right to suspend an Entity's or its users access to GÉANT resources and services or block any unusual or illegal network activity in order to protect the network and services of GÉANT, other Entities', or other third parties reached via GÉANT network.
